California’s move toward zero-emission transportation is changing how commercial fleets think about maintenance. For operators adding electric trucks, buses, vans, or refrigerated equipment, the pre-trip checklist is no longer only about oil leaks, belts, engine coolant, and diesel aftertreatment.
Electric vehicles have fewer moving parts than internal-combustion vehicles, but they still depend on complex systems that must be inspected and maintained. One of the most important is the battery thermal management system, or BTMS.
In a diesel truck, cooling-system concerns usually center on the engine, radiator, charge-air cooler, transmission, and aftertreatment components. In an electric commercial vehicle, battery temperature becomes equally important. If the battery operates outside its intended temperature range, the vehicle may experience reduced range, charging problems, power derating, shortened battery life, or a warning that takes the vehicle out of service.

The electric-vehicle checks that belong on a pre-trip inspection
There is not one universal California BTMS checklist that applies to every electric commercial vehicle. The manufacturer’s inspection and service procedures should always take priority.
Still, fleet managers can adapt existing commercial vehicle inspection practices to include several practical checks.
1. Review warning lights and fault messages
At key-on, drivers should watch for battery, charging, thermal management, or high-voltage system warnings. A warning that remains illuminated should not be dismissed as a minor electrical issue.
Fleet teams should also review telematics alerts and stored fault codes when available. An occasional temperature warning may require investigation, while repeated warnings, power derating, or charging interruptions may indicate a developing problem.
2. Look for visible coolant leaks
Many commercial EVs use liquid cooling for the battery and other high-load components. Drivers or technicians should look for:
- Puddles or damp areas beneath the vehicle
- Low coolant levels where a visible reservoir or sight glass is provided
- Damaged hoses, lines, clamps, or fittings
- Signs of rubbing, chafing, or road debris damage
- Unusual residue around connections
The coolant type, concentration, and replacement interval must follow the OEM’s requirements. EV coolant is not automatically interchangeable with the coolant used in a diesel engine.
3. Pay attention to unusual sounds
A cooling pump, fan, or valve may operate during charging, pre-conditioning, or heavy use. New whining, grinding, rattling, or cycling behavior deserves attention.
A driver does not need to diagnose the component in the field. The important step is to report the change before it becomes a roadside breakdown.
4. Confirm charging and pre-conditioning status
A vehicle that begins a route without the expected state of charge may not have completed its charging session or thermal pre-conditioning cycle.
Fleet managers should monitor:
- Charging completion
- Scheduled departure settings
- Charging interruptions
- Unusual charging times
- Battery temperature alerts
- Range changes under similar routes and loads
Pre-conditioning can help prepare the battery and cabin before departure while the vehicle is connected to external power. This may reduce the energy burden placed on the traction battery during the first part of the route.
5. Check for physical damage
Battery enclosures and underbody components are exposed to road debris, curbs, loading areas, and uneven surfaces. Any impact, scrape, intrusion, or visible damage near a battery enclosure should be treated seriously.
Drivers should not remove battery covers or handle high-voltage components. Instead, they should document the damage and report it through the fleet’s established safety process.
How EV maintenance differs from diesel maintenance
Electric trucks generally eliminate some routine diesel services, such as engine oil changes, fuel-filter replacement, and certain exhaust-system repairs. That does not make them maintenance-free.
EV maintenance shifts attention toward:
- Battery and thermal management diagnostics
- Coolant condition and leak inspections
- Charging equipment and connectors
- High-voltage cables and protective covers
- Electric drive motors and inverters
- Regenerative braking operation
- Low-voltage electrical systems
- Tire wear and suspension components
- Software and control-module updates

California’s electric transition is not simply a vehicle-purchasing decision. It is an operational change involving routes, charging, facilities, drivers, technicians, records, and emergency response planning.
